Prior to entering kindergarten, it is the expectation that a child should possess certain skills and has had certain experiences.

Speaking and Listening

bulletSpeaks well and is understandable
bulletRecites full name, full name of parents, address and telephone number, several nursery rhymes
bulletParticipates in games (riddles, rhyming, memory and board games)
bulletHas experience being read to and expressing ideas.

"Reading"

bulletRecognizes his first name (written), at least ten alphabet letters and all colors
bulletHolds book right side up, enjoys listening to stories, models reading from front to back and left to right, makes up a story while looking at a book, retells story after having heard it
bulletHas a "sense of story" (telling a story from pictures, retelling a familiar fairy tale with a beginning, middle, and end)

Writing

bulletWrites first name and at least ten alphabet letters
bulletColors recognizable objects
bulletHas had exposure to print in a variety of settings (mail, e-mail, recipes, greeting cards)
bulletHas had exposure to writing with a variety of objects (pencil, pen, crayon, markers)

Math

bulletSorts simple objects and counts to 20
bulletRecognizes and recreates a simple pattern, smaller to larger and larger to smaller
bulletHas number awareness and recognizes all shapes
bulletRecognizes numerals 1-10
bulletUnderstands "greater," "less" and "equal to"
bulletHas had exposure to bills, coins, clocks, rulers, scales, and cooking measurement tools.

Knowledge of the World

bulletHas had exposure to family trips (zoo, museum, aquarium, library, and beach)
bulletHas had exposure to media (movies, television, radio, computer, magazine, newspaper, videos, and computer programs)

Aesthetic Development

bulletHas had exposure to art (painting, sculpture, photography, architecture), dance, music (instrumental and vocal), and literature (poems, stories, songs, fables, fiction and nonfiction)

Social Development

bulletUses bathroom independently
bulletWorks and plays with same age peers
bulletIs comfortable away from parent part of the day
bulletSits and listens to a story
bulletListens to an adult for 15 minutes
bulletBlows his nose and discards tissue properly
bulletCovers mouth/nose when sneezing or coughing
bulletDresses himself (manages buttons and zippers, puts shoes on correct feet, opens and closes jacket, pants, backpack, and lunchbox)
bulletCleans up after snack, puts away toys and books
bulletWaits his turn, cooperates and shares with others
bulletHas taken part in a group of young children (preschool, play group, or other activity)

Fine Motor

Gross Motor
