ABOUT US

The NORTHWEST SPECIAL EDUCATION REGION services three towns in the Northwest part of the State of Rhode Island: Foster, Glocester and Scituate.

The Director and the Assistant Director of Special Education are responsible for planning, organizing and coordinating special education programs, services, curriculum, and transportation for the students.

There are ten (10) schools in the region with shared responsibility by the Director and Assistant Director as follows:

REGIONWIDE SERVICES:

• Extended school year programs – includes integrated camp program for most students.

• Adaptive Physical Education services

• Occupational Therapy services (OT and COTA provide assessment, service and professional development)

• Physical Therapy services

• Positive Behavioral supports (via Creative Options, Inc.)

• Professional development opportunities

• Career/situational assessment (Project JOBS)

• Child Outreach programs

• Coordination of regional programs for low incidence populations

• Management of Medicaid programs.

MISSION STATEMENT

To provide all students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become responsible, successful and contributing citizens in a continually changing world.

Child Outreach

Child Outreach is a free service sponsored by the Rhode Island Department of Education and offered through your local school system. The program provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about other resources that are available in the community.

Project JOBS

The goal of the Project JOBS program is to help students, ages 16-21 to experience first-hand about career opportunities and experience skills and qualities needed to succeed in today’s changing economy. On site training, transportation and other supports are provided.

Career exploration experiences are typically scheduled for eight weeks, but are always tailored to the employers’ and students’ needs for approximately two to six hours per week depending on their skills and educational goals.
